Why I love East Coast Road

Seriously East Coast Road is my loveeeee

I really don't mind the 45 mins bus trip. There's so much, like SOOO MUCH to eat. And I doubt you can find so many food concentrated within one neighborhood. On top of food, it's just so nice to walk along the East Coast Road, passing by the beautiful shop houses, random boutiques, there's many gyms. It's really like a lifestyle hub. Always have like 2 rounds here, coz there's just so much to eat, we're talking about all sorts of cuisine here. Here's the list of restaurants I've visited, hope to be adding on to the list!

Part 1: Fill your belly

So much interesting food to try here.

Katong Laksa

Cheap and good. The spicy and sweet laksa broth is always super hearty. Love the noodles too, it's just the right texture and goes well with the broth.

Baba Chews

East Coast Road is also the Peranakan culture centre I'd say. Baba Chews serves fusion Peranakan/Local food and the menu features many local favorites. If you crave for something with local flavors but more refined in taste, this is the place to go!

Rabbit Carrot Gun

Came here after watching the Crown and Florence Pugh's British Food Mukbang. This is where you can get Scotch eggs, bubble and squeak, bangers and mash, shepherd's pie and much more. Part of me wished I can do the same mukbang there haha. My bubble and squeak was delicious! Sautéed veg with all my favorite meats (bacon, bangers) done right really.

Delicious Boneless Chicken Rice

I die die dabao-ed this home despite being so stuffed from all the food I had during the day. This was Food King's favorite chicken rice and I can totally understand why. Chicken was super tender with a generous sprinkle of fried garlic. Rice was oily and fluffeh, super fragrant. Then wow there's soup and achar to add some crunch and heartiness. The soup is not like some plain typical soup, but legit chicken soup with veg. Will definitely dabao again haha.

Part 2: Treat yourself

Always second round at this area. So many cool cafes and snacks to check out, both hipster and traditional treats can be found.

Forty Hands

Usually when people ask me which cafe has the best coffee, Forty Hands come into my mind. Like the difference is really there. Coffee is extra smooth, but still has a nice aromatic caffeine kick. Havent had the chance to try their mains so far, but I'm sure they are good. They also serve this Tau Sar Pau which is a pretty odd thing to have in a hipster cafe but it's pretty good. Super thin skin with very smooth red bean filling.

Birds of Paradise

Have always passed by this ice cream store that is nearby Katong Laksa. There's like this super aromatic scent of waffles and my friend told me that the extra herb was thyme! Such a genius addition to cut down the sweetness.

I got a Chrysanthemum flavor ice cream. Gotta say it does taste like the Yeo's Chrysanthemum drink HAHA. But oh wells, the cone really won my heart.

Sinpopo

Ooooh I love a cafe that serves local food with a modern twist. Came here for desserts and wow the cakes stole my heart. The pillowy pandan cake was good. It's a moist sponge cake with a very nostalgic aroma of pandan and those blue swirls on the cake made it look extra dreamy. We ordered a curry wedges for sides, and it was surprisingly delicious too!

Kim Choo Kueh Chang

Needs no introduction I believe. They make delicious bachang in many yummy flavors and sells all sorts of nyonya/malay kueh at affordable price. I never left East Coast Road without dabao-ing some of the kuih and bachang here. And I think this is the only place i get 2 bucks ondeh ondeh.

Madeleine's Portuguese Egg Tart

Portuguese tart are not as mainstream as it was when I was a kid. Quite happy to find this bakery that specializes in this. I forgot how tasty this was. It's a sweeter version of egg tart with flaky and more dough-ey crust. We had them toasty warm, so delicious and what a nice afternoon snack.

Baker's Well

Again, East Coast Road just has so many things but I only have one belly. I die die dabao-ed this almond croissant from Baker's Well after catching a whiff of the insanely yummy aroma of buttery baked goods. It's delicious, so fluffeh and buttery. The nuttiness of almond compliments the sweet and buttery bread. I'm a big fan of almond croissants now.

Part 3: Explore

One of the reasons why this area is just charming is also because of the beautiful shop houses that gave a splash of colour and culture. You don't feel like you are just strolling on any other street, it's an exciting one where it almost felt like you may discover something interesting from the past every now and then. I hope these shophouse will continue to be preserved.

Wah I realised I took so many photos at East Coast Road, till the point I'm abit paiseh now. Seems like I just love every sight of these shophouses.

You can also take a walk towards JooChiat for another stretch of beautiful shophouses. Time for more instagrammable pics. Loads of food around too.

There you go, that's why I love East Coast Road. Can't wait to add on to this list.
